Spam & Spyware

Unexpected Computer Behavior May Be Caused By Deceptive Software

Adware: A software application that can display advertising banners while the program is running or via some other triggering mechanism is called adware. Ad delivery systems are most often integrated into free applications as a way for developers to recover costs or generate revenue. A critical eye has been placed on adware system since in many cases, in addition to downloading ads, they may also upload user information collected without explicit permission. This type of adware is often referred to "trackware" or "spyware".

Spyware: Any software that covertly gathers user information through the user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. Spyware applications are typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded from the Internet. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers.

Spam: Unsolicited junk email - generally advertising for some product sent wide-scale to a mailing list or newsgroup. There are a number of ways you can find yourself on a spammer's email list, including signing up for newsletters that sell lists of their clients' email addresses, listing your email address on a webpage or newsgroup, or even by choosing an email address that spammers may be able to guess.

Spam Filter: A devise for blocking unsolicited junk email, known as spam. Spam filters can be set up at the network level, so that junk email is blocked from entering a local network, or else at the individual computer level, so that junk emails are sorted out into a separate junk email folder. Spam filters involve a security level trade-off; the goal is to block all unsolicited email without accidentally filtering out email from legitimate senders. Internet service providers and spam filter software vendors have devised clever algorithms to do this sorting for you, or else allow you to tweak and customize the filters to your individual preferences.
